A Little Bit About Me

Since I basically blog about history and architecture, I try to limit the useless information about me.  Once in awhile, though, it's fun to indulge in a bit of getting to know me/you stuff.  And, as I've been tagged by Heather at Pink Milk, a fun, crafty blog, I've decided to give it a go.  So, to answer Heather's questions....

1.  Have you ever been in a newspaper?

Oh, yes.  The joy of growing up in a small town is that eventually, everyone ends up in the newspaper.  I've been in multiple times, for a variety of things including school plays, students awards and scholarships, and even work projects.  This picture, though, comes from probably my cutest appearance in the local paper.  I was three.

2.  If you were given £1000 which you had to spend which would be the first shop/s you'd head to?

First I'd go to the money changer, as I'm American.  The good news is that the pound is worth more than the dollar, so I'd have even more to spend!  My first stop would probably be Schuler Books, a wonderful local bookstore.  I'd drop several hundred on books (both for me and others), and then leave, count the leftovers, and head off to a lovely fabric shop in Williamston that sells better-than JoAnns quality fabric.  Yup - that money wouldn't last long!

3.  Is there a skill you wish you had?

Yes.  I would love to learn to tat, but have NO idea if I'll ever actually sit down to do it.  I'm a bit intimidated by the fact that everyone I know who has ever known a tatter refers to it as being quite tricky.

4.  What was my favo(u)rite sweet as a child?

Hard to say.  I have a MONSTEROUS sweet tooth.  One of my favorite sweet treats was actually a sort of cookie called Piccadillies.  They were sort of shortbreadish sandwich cookies that had marshmellow, coconut, and jelly in the center.  And no, they weren't from that Piccadilly - I think they were made in Wisconsin.  Unfortunately, they have not been made in years and years.  Sigh.

5.  What is my favo(u)rite time of year?

Winter and Christmas.  I love celebrating Christmas, and trying to wrap my mind around the concept that God actually came to Earth in the form of a teensy, helpless, crying baby.  I also don't mind the food, piles of Christmas cookies, fancy dresses, parties, family time, and gift giving.  I'm also a big fan of gift wrapping...in fact when I was a kid, I wrapped dozens of grocery items individually when my parents did a 'stock the pantry' sort of thing for my grandparents.  It was great fun!

6. If you were marooned on a desert island with a celebrity, who would you like it to be?
Do they have to be a living celebrity?  I'd probably pick a writer....maybe Charlotte Bronte?  Louisa May Alcott?  The bad news is that we'd probably stink at living off the land, and wouldn't last long.  But, the conversation would be great in the meantime!

7. When did you last cry?

Not sure of the date, but probably about a month or so ago.  I tend to need to clean the eyes with a good cry every 6 weeks or so.  Needless to say, this is not Bow Tie Man's favorite thing about me.

It's now my job to pass this task on to seven of you, except with new questions.  So....

1.  If you could wear any dress from one era for one day, what would it look like?
2.  If you could go on an all expense paid vacation for 2 weeks, where would you go?
3.  If you could live in a book, which one would it be?
4.  Do you play any instruments?  If yes, which ones?
5.  Where were you married?
6.  If you could own one museum quality piece of antique furniture, what would it be?
7.  Do you speak any languages besides English?  If yes, which?

The seven people I'm tagging to answer these are:

Clara at Counting It All Joy
Jenn at Wanting What I Have
Millie at Needles and Haystacks
SusieQT at Practice in Time
Jane at Planet Baby
Joyful Mum (Rosemary?) at Joyfulmum
Patricia at Vintage Linen Treasures

Oh, and a little bit more about me.  Come this March, I'm going to be an aunt for the very first time!  Yay!  Along that same line, can anyone recommend a good source for an old fashioned Christening gown pattern?

This was interesting to read about you! :) I'd be interested to learn tatting too, but I doubt I'll ever get to it!

Thanks for tagging me! :)

Oh, c'mon, you know if Jane Eyre was a real person that is the celebrity with whom you would want to be stuck on an island.

Wanting What I Have said...

Congratulations on becoming an AUNT for the first time! It is precious and special! I am so happy for you!

I am flattered you'd tag me! I hope you won't mind me answering these questions here...

1. I'd say something fancy from the 1800s - with lots of details and a big bussell! (And I do hope what I have in my mind is actually historically accurate) And I would TOTALLY catch the engineer's eye!

2. Back to Italy...with the engineer...and spend more days in Rome!

3. Probably "The Chronicles of Narnia" - of course, with the engineer. In fact, I'd only pick that series if the engineer was there. He would make it oh, so much more exciting! If I were to go solo, "Stepping Heavenward" by Elizabeth Prentiss....oh, maybe "The Count of Monte Cristo" or "Les Miserables!" All wonderful and exciting reads!

4. Negative. (I truly faked playing the clarinet all through high school just because the engineer was in the band...and I had a clear shot of him playing the trombone!)

5. We were married in a church in the south...and it snowed on our wedding day! And my mother was giddy as could be and my mother-in-law couldn't stop crying.

6. An 18th century Buffet Deux Corps

7. I used to be fairly fluent in Spanish...that was 7 years ago...the last time I tried to habla with a native Spanish speaker, I was rather rusty, but able to limp along.

Thanks for being interested and asking! I am honored and enjoyed reading yours!

To the person who said Jane Eyre, she would be one woman I would love to me, I think we would have lots in common. I found all that very interesting.

Hi Val I was really touched when this post came up in Google Reader. I really enjoyed getting to know you a little better - you should step out more often! I did a 'tagged' post only this week so if it's okay, I'll put this one 'on the backburner' for a while. I promise I won't forget! J x
